It can be really tough whacking your way through debt. You might have stopped going to restaurants or movies with your friends. Perhaps you’ve decided to skip your cousin’s destination wedding, even though you’ve never been to Barcelona and you’re dying to go. You’ve decided to put yourself and your financial health first, and that is a bold, empowering move to make. I found that there were times when what I needed to do to stick to my plan required some selfishness on my end. Aaron wasn’t exactly excited when I imposed a $3 gift-giving limit on Valentine’s Day. While I wanted to recognize my husband’s desire to celebrate a romantic holiday, I wanted to be out of debt even more. Although focusing on Needs-Only spending by cutting down on the money you use to buy gifts for other people may seem selfish at first blush, it’s anything but. I personally can’t think of anything less selfish to do than forgoing a box of chocolates or a dinner out for a debt-free foundation that you can build a solid life on together.
It’s really easy to feel guilted into spending money when it’s going to make someone else happy. Telling others “I really can’t” or giving an outright no isn’t an easy undertaking, especially when it’s not your MO. At times it’s hard to do, but know that it’s okay to put yourself first. A good friend is going to graciously get over the fact that you had to pass on attending her elaborate seven-course birthday dinner at the luxe restaurant. I started to see how putting other people’s desires over my own perpetuated the mess I was in.
